Deutsche Welle commissioned this quartet project in Cologne as the Bach anniversary year of 2000 approached. The recording was sufficiently well received to send the quartet on more than twenty concerts across Germany during the anniversary celebrations.

Bill Dobbins and Rolf Römer divide most of the arrangements between them, while bassist John Goldsby takes on the First Cello Suite. Bach remains present even in the two original compositions: Römer builds one from the B-A-C-H motif, and Dobbins dedicates “Pennies in D” to J.S.B.
