The album grew out of Three Pieces After Bach, commissioned for Mehldau in 2015.
Five Bach performances are each answered by a Mehldau piece that starts from the same musical problem, reflecting his interest in Bach as both composer and improviser.

The five underlying Bach works appear once in first-use order; BWV 857’s Prelude and Fugue are separate consecutive videos.
