Ravel had already sought out jazz on his 1928 American tour, spending nights with George Gershwin at Harlem venues including the Savoy Ballroom and Cotton Club.
His presence on a jazz-trio album is therefore less unlikely than it may first seem.
Knudsen spent several years preparing the arrangements and chose miniatures such as Debussy’s “The Little Shepherd” and Ravel’s brief A-minor Prelude rather than relying on the obvious showpieces.
