Liebman spreads the opera melodies across changing small groups rather than using one fixed band, with Phil Woods, Vic Juris, Phil Markowitz and several singers appearing in different combinations.

On several tracks the line Puccini wrote for the voice passes instead to soprano or alto saxophone, while oboe, bassoon and cello add chamber colours around it.
