The question behind this album is John O’Gallagher’s own: what would Webern’s music sound like if he were a jazz musician living in New York City today? O’Gallagher answers with a seven-piece band of saxophone, vibraphone, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and voice.
He keeps Webern’s themes and counterpoint close, then draws the solo sections from the same tone rows, trichords and rhythmic structures. The serial method does not replace the compositions; it supplies material for improvisation within them.
