Richard Strauss’s most famous jazz afterlife begins with a single sunrise. The opening fanfare of Also sprach Zarathustra, made globally familiar by 2001: A Space Odyssey, became a US No. 2 hit in Eumir Deodato’s nine-minute jazz-funk arrangement. Decades later, a jazzed-up version came full circle when Flip Philipp brought the same fanfare to a jazz group drawn from members of the Vienna Symphony.
