Valse triste began as theatre music for a scene in Arvid Järnefelt’s Kuolema in which a woman rises from her deathbed to dance with spectral partners. That unease between ballroom grace and approaching death gives jazz musicians more than a pretty waltz to swing, while Sibelius’s clipped motifs and dark pedal points offer other ways into his music.
