Charlie Shavers devised “Anitra’s Dance” for concerts at New York’s Museum of Modern Art with composer Morton Gould. Gould’s woodwind group would play Grieg straight, then Kirby’s sextet would answer with the swing version; Shavers remembered the paired performances as a great success, and the subsequent record helped propel the group to national popularity.
