Jerry Gray’s arrangement was too substantial for one side of a 78, so Verdi’s chorus became a two-part performance that listeners had to turn over halfway through. Early labels credited Glenn Miller as arranger, but later pressings restored Gray’s name, fittingly for the musician who also shaped “A String of Pearls” and “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”.
