Farmer and Hall had led a famously responsive quartet together in the early 1960s, then barely recorded as a pair until Big Blues reunited them in 1978. Farmer once said Hall seemed able to anticipate any direction a soloist might take; that alert, spacious partnership is especially well suited to Ravel’s long-breathed melody.
