Larry Clinton’s Debussy adaptation had been an eight-week No. 1 for Bea Wain in 1938; by the time Fitzgerald reached it in 1961, it had become a standard rather than a novelty. Her small group strips away the dance-band scale of the original hit, leaving space for her to bend Clinton’s song back towards jazz.
