Gifts & Messages

Roland Kirk

Composer
Tchaikovsky
Released
1964
Label
Mercury
Forces
saxophone; quartet

Kirk rarely allowed a tune to remain sealed off from the rest of musical history: Gifts & Messages is full of quotations, puns and melodies wandering into one another. “March On, Swan Lake” treats Tchaikovsky as part of that teeming memory, with the ballet theme becoming material for a hard-bop quartet rather than a polite concert encore.
