Clinton turned Debussy’s piano piece into a dance-band song and gave Bea Wain nearly two minutes of instrumental suspense before her vocal entrance. The result spent eight weeks at No. 1 in 1938 and became Wain’s signature recording, although Victor had shortened her first name from Beatrice to Bea without consulting her.
