Kamasi Washington encountered Debussy and Ravel while studying ethnomusicology and composition at UCLA, where the veteran jazz composer, arranger and bandleader Gerald Wilson became one of his mentors. Wilson described the French composers as deeply soulful and remarked that “Clair de lune” sounded like a slow blues. That comment gave Washington the starting point for an arrangement that eventually expanded Debussy’s piano miniature for his large ensemble and choir.
