Laws had studied at Juilliard and played with both the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera orchestras before making Afro-Classic.

Arranger Don Sebesky used that double life to push the jazz flute into new territory, most strikingly in a 15-minute Bach Passacaglia where Ron Carter switches to electric cello and Laws to electric flute.
