Mozart’s melodies can sound effortless, but jazz musicians soon find how firmly they are held together by rhythm, proportion and harmonic timing. Variation and improvisation were part of his own life at the keyboard, which makes it apt that these albums treat his themes as material to be tested rather than tunes to be politely decorated.
