Alexander Scriabin’s Ragtime Band began with a broken arm. When one of David Gordon’s students injured her right arm, he returned to Scriabin’s Prelude for the Left Hand and heard tango and early-jazz possibilities within it. That discovery became “Prelude for Both Hands” and eventually the idea behind the album.
Gordon places Scriabin’s piano miniatures among music circulating around the time of the composer’s death in 1915, including ragtime, blues, tango, danzón and choro. The juxtapositions test Gordon’s belief that Scriabin’s harmonies and compact forms could find a natural place in a jazz repertoire.
