Rino Vernizzi played jazz piano in nightclubs to pay for his conservatoire studies, then spent years as principal bassoonist of Rome’s Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Bach & Me brings those two musical lives together.

With the bassoon as a jazz voice, Vernizzi can meet Bach’s lines on unusual terms. The trio moves from complete dance sequences to tiny fragments, treating counterpoint as something its players can phrase, answer and improvise around.

The classical player uses one complete recording of the Sinfonia from Bach’s Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826, for tracks 10–12, which divide its Grave, Andante and fugal Allegro between three tracks; each of the other sixteen tracks has a recording of its own.
