Rino Vernizzi first set jazz aside for an orchestral career, spending several years as principal bassoon of Rome’s Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. When he returned, he brought that unlikely jazz instrument with him: in his own groups the bassoon took the lead, trading lines with clarinet and saxophone and turning the classical repertoire he knew from the inside into material for improvisation.
