Renato Sellani was eighty-four when Chopin - Piano Solo was released in 2010, yet his relationship with the piano had never followed the usual conservatoire path. He said that he had never taken a piano lesson and, for most of his life, did not even own an instrument; he learned by listening and by playing in public.

The fuller title printed on the CD, Thank You, Chopin / Scusami, Chopin, gets close to the album’s tone: affectionate, grateful and knowingly free. Alone at the piano, Sellani returns to several pieces more than once, treating Chopin not as a fixed recital programme but as music he can reconsider from one improvisation to the next.

The classical player follows all fifteen classical tracks in album order; when Sellani returns to the same piece, the same performance returns with him: the E major Étude serves tracks 7 and 14, the A-flat Waltz tracks 9 and 15, the E-flat Nocturne tracks 4 and 16–18, and the C minor Prelude tracks 8 and 11–13.
