Bassoon, clarinet and soprano saxophone make one of the strangest front lines in the catalogue, with bass and drums underneath. Bach’s counterpoint passes through reed colours far removed from those of the usual piano trio.

On the original disc, Goldberg Jazz was the title and Play Bach, Play Paganini the subtitle; streaming services later reversed the emphasis. Vernizzi arranged every piece, moving from Bach to Paganini without changing the group’s improbable instrumental character.
