John Di Martino leads an acoustic piano trio with Ed Howard on bass and Alvin Atkinson on drums. He treats Liszt’s melodies as the beginnings of new songs, giving them titles such as “Lost Love”, “Forest Spirits” and “Sea Goddess” before opening them to improvisation.

The album was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York on 25 and 26 March 2011. Several Liszt works prompt more than one response: Funérailles supplies both the quiet introduction to “Dawn of a New Day” and the principal theme of “Farewell Minuet”, while Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 reappears in two contrasting pieces.
