Liszt
Liszt was a formidable improviser as well as a virtuoso, and his concert paraphrases treated operatic melodies as material for transformation. Jazz players recognise both impulses: the freedom to remake a familiar tune and the delight of astonishing an audience while doing it. Those impulses connect approaches as different as the Quintette du Hot Club de France’s “Liebestraum” and Eugen Cicero’s Romantic Swing.
