Jo-Yu Chen had already made four albums of original jazz when she was invited to play a one-o’clock-in-the-morning slot at Taiwan’s 24-hour Schubert festival. She wondered whether anyone would attend, but the 2,000-seat hall filled. A return invitation for the following year’s Mozart festival gave her the other half of this EP.
Recorded in New York with bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Tommy Crane, Schubert & Mozart: ‘Round Midnight reconnects Chen with the classical training she had set aside when she turned to jazz. Rather than treating the repertoire as a diversion from her own music, she draws on the same interest in counterpoint, harmonic detail and trio interplay that shaped her earlier records.

The classical side contains only the source pieces used on the album, in album order. The jazz side presents the complete album whenever a dependable copy can be embedded.
The classical player has five recordings for four tracks because track 2 joins Mozart’s Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je, Maman”, K. 265, to the first movement of his Piano Sonata in C major, K. 545, and carries a recording of each.
Spotify’s player is here for convenience; the full track listing below remains available to everyone.
