George Mraz began on violin at seven and discovered jazz five years later through Louis Armstrong on Voice of America. He switched to double bass almost on a dare to himself: dissatisfied with the bassist on a big-band job, he picked up the instrument during a break and tried it. That route from bowed melody to jazz bass made him a natural third voice beside Beirach’s piano and Huebner’s violin.
