As a young pianist in Leipzig, Joachim Kühn practised along with Ornette Coleman records, although Coleman rarely worked with pianists. Decades later, Coleman chose him as a duo partner, wrote new music for each engagement and left him 170 handwritten compositions, completing an unlikely journey from private apprenticeship to five years of collaboration.
