Saxophonist Tommy Smith founded the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra in 1995 with repertory and reinvention sharing the same stage. Smith’s 52-minute recasting of Rhapsody in Blue and the orchestra’s return to Ellington and Strayhorn’s Peer Gynt arrangements show its preference for large-scale reimagination over polite orchestral tribute.
