Stan Kenton was never interested in treating a big band as merely a dance orchestra. His 1950 Innovations Orchestra added strings and woodwind to a heavily expanded brass section, and later projects brought Wagner and Lecuona into the same restless search for orchestral colour. In Malagueña, the melody becomes a fuse for brass and percussion on a scale unmistakably his own.
