Lecuona moved easily between concert piano music, theatre, film and the dance band, which is why “Malagueña” can sound equally at home in a recital or a roaring jazz orchestra. Its repeated climb and plunge gave Stan Kenton’s band a ready-made dramatic engine, while Lecuona’s Afro-Cuban dances point towards still other jazz possibilities.
