Paquito D’Rivera traces the idea behind Jazz Meets the Classics to his father’s small Silvertone record player. A classical saxophonist who loved jazz but could not improvise, Tito D’Rivera played Benny Goodman’s chamber trio back to back with Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, deliberately giving his son both worlds at once.
Recorded live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York in 2012, the album carries that childhood mixture into D’Rivera’s own band. His blues version of Mozart’s Adagio had already travelled with him for some forty years, since he first played it with Irakere; the finished album won the 2015 Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.
