Mahler packed his symphonies and songs with marches, folk-like melodies and abrupt changes of mood and style. Artists such as Uri Caine treat that material as they would a jazz standard, rearranging it and opening it to group improvisation. Caine even brings in cantorial singing, turntables, gospel voices and breakbeats while returning always to Mahler’s own melodies and song texts.
