Uri Caine recorded Urlicht / Primal Light in Brooklyn in June 1996 with a cast that included downtown-jazz players, singers, a cantor and a turntablist.
The result won the German Mahler Society’s recording award, despite prompting sharply divided reactions, and Caine later said it opened the door to his continuing work with classical repertoire.
