The Adagio of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez has escaped the concerto to acquire a life of its own. Its long cor anglais melody offered Miles Davis and Gil Evans something strong enough to survive trumpet and an expanded jazz orchestra in Sketches of Spain. Their 1960 recording became one of the work’s first major crossings into popular music, opening a route that improvisers still follow.
