The Hot Club group had no piano or drums, so Liszt’s solo-piano showpiece had to be remade entirely from plucked and bowed strings. Recorded in Paris in April 1937, their “Liebestraum” catches Reinhardt and Grappelli treating a Romantic concert favourite with the same conversational freedom they brought to popular songs.
