Gil Evans had first arranged Delibes’s song for Claude Thornhill’s orchestra in the late 1940s, but that version was never recorded. For Miles Ahead he rebuilt it as part of a continuous suite, slowing the original 3/4 bolero into a spacious 4/4 ballad before letting double-time swing disturb the calm. It became the first classical work Miles Davis recorded, two years before the sessions for Sketches of Spain.
