The Swingle Singers & The Modern Jazz Quartet
When Ward Swingle and John Lewis agreed backstage in Paris in 1964 that their groups should record together, each had already travelled some distance towards the other. The Swingle Singers had turned Bach into wordless vocal jazz, while Lewis had long written fugues and other tightly composed forms for the Modern Jazz Quartet; Place Vendôme gives Bach and Purcell the same attention as Lewis’s own compositions.
