Lateef invented the word psychicemotus to join the mind and the emotions, which is a neat description of his poised reading of Satie. He had taken up the flute on Kenny Burrell’s advice and was still studying it formally at the Manhattan School of Music when this version was recorded, with James Black’s hand percussion quietly loosening the pulse beneath him.
