The Baroque Jazz Ensemble’s name suggests Bach and harpsichords, but Ira Schulman’s 1977 quartet follows the pavane across much later music. Morton Gould’s Pavanne opens the record, Fauré’s closes it, and the 1939 standard “The Lamp Is Low” reaches Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte by way of a popular song; Schulman’s flute, clarinet and tenor saxophone give those three distant relations a recognisable family voice.
