Puente’s reputation rested on dance music and spectacular timbales playing, but he was also a serious big-band writer with an appetite for jazz harmony. His “Ritual Fire Dance” puts de Falla inside that orchestral Afro-Cuban language, giving the familiar melody to brass and reeds while the percussion supplies a completely different kind of fire.
