“Bach à la Jazz” began by accident while Herskowitz was recording Bach’s C-minor Prelude in the style of Glenn Gould for The Triplets of Belleville. Between takes he started playing it as a jazz waltz for fun; the producer asked him to record the idea, and its appearance in the Oscar-nominated film and soundtrack carried his playing to an international audience. On Upstairs, the piece joins his jazz interpretation of Schumann’s “Träumerei” in a live solo recital recorded at the Montreal club that gives the album its name.
