David Rees-Williams, bassist Neil Francis and drummer Phil Laslett had been playing together for more than two decades when they recorded Back from Before.
Several arrangements place two older works inside the same track, including pairs by Gibbons, Pergolesi and Bach. These are more than convenient medleys: the joins allow one piece to redirect the harmony or rhythm of another, showing how readily the trio can find new routes through music separated by period, form and purpose.
Hear both
The classical side contains only the source pieces used on the album, in album order. The jazz side presents the complete album whenever a dependable copy can be embedded.
The classical player has fifteen recordings for twelve tracks because tracks 3, 4 and 6 each join two works and carry a recording of both: Gibbons’s The Queenes Command and Preludium, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater: Quis est homo and Se tu m’ami, and Bach’s Prelude in C major, BWV 846, and the Sinfonia from Partita No. 2, BWV 826; the album itself is not available to stream, so the jazz player is empty.
