Laura Dubin’s first piano teacher was her mother, a classical pianist. At seven, an uncle who played jazz showed her how to improvise by staying on the black keys. Those two childhood lessons meet naturally on Classical Jazz.

Dubin later described hearing Oscar Peterson play West Side Story as the moment familiar tunes began to swing for her. Here she does the same with classical themes, reshaping music she had known since childhood for her own trio.
