Chestnut opens with Debussy’s “Golliwog’s Cakewalk”, which brought an African-American dance and ragtime rhythm into a French piano suite in 1908.

The trio does more than add swing to music that was already syncopated: block-chord gospel and bop flicker through the Cakewalk, while Mozart’s Turkish Rondo later moves from samba into march.
