For Uri Caine, a classical score is a set of possibilities rather than an object under glass. His projects have put Mahler beside cantorial singing and turntables, and sent Bach’s Goldberg Variations through salsa, tango and a New Orleans stomp. That range makes sense for a pianist who studied composition with George Rochberg and George Crumb while learning jazz on Philadelphia bandstands.
