On Thinking Allowed, the David Rees-Williams Trio ranges across music by Bach, Franck, Mozart, Grieg, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Ravel and Debussy, as well as the old Irish hymn tune St Patrick. Rees-Williams adds Hammond organ to the trio’s established combination of piano, bass guitar and drums, giving some of the arrangements a colour far removed from their original instrumentation.

These are not variations built to a single formula. A Bach invention, a Franck chorale and a movement by Ravel each produce a different kind of improvisation, but the original melody remains part of the argument instead of serving as a brief introduction before the jazz begins.
