Richie Beirach
Richie Beirach had studied classical piano since childhood when, at thirteen, he heard Red Garland play “Billy Boy” on Miles Davis’s Milestones. What caught him was improvisation, absent from the Mozart-and-Beethoven education he had known. He later returned to classical music on different terms, opening Bartók, Mompou and Monteverdi to improvisation without rubbing away the character of each composer.
