Gounod

Gounod’s Ave Maria was itself a transformation: he wrote a new melody over Bach’s C major Prelude from The Well-Tempered Clavier. Jazz musicians who take it up are continuing a process already written into the piece, hearing another possibility inside music that was already complete.
