Massenet had a gift for making an instrumental melody seem to speak. Élégie travelled through several forms, from an instrumental Mélodie and the “Invocation” in the incidental music for Les Érinnyes to a song with words, before Art Tatum returned it to the piano. The Méditation from Thaïs followed another path out of the theatre, becoming a favourite encore in countless instrumental guises and eventually an invitation to improvise.
