Pachelbel wrote a large body of organ and church music, but his modern fame rests overwhelmingly on a chamber piece that was not published until more than two centuries after his death. The Canon in D was written for three violins over a repeating bass and paired with a Gigue; its jazz afterlife usually keeps the bass pattern and leaves its companion behind.
