After arranging Bach and Chopin for jazz trio, Herskowitz chose solo piano for Mirror Image, wanting to hear his classical and jazz backgrounds in something more exposed and personal. These three cuts range from a blue-tinged meeting of Satie and Schubert to an eleven-minute expansion of Ravel’s Adagio. In The Last Hope, a melody he had already heard as gospel turned out to have circulated as the hymn “Mercy” in 272 hymnals; his arrangement lets Gottschalk’s Romantic filigree grow into what he calls a “full-on Gospel service climax” before settling back.
